How to build a shed base without concrete

An honest look at slabs, plastic grids, timber frames and gravel for a shed base, when each is genuinely fine, and the point where only poured concrete will do.

Yes, you can build a shed base without concrete, but only for a light timber shed. Paving slabs, a plastic grid filled with gravel, a treated timber frame or a compacted gravel bed all work well if the ground is prepared properly and the shed is small. A concrete building, however, always needs a poured concrete base. There is no non-concrete shortcut for anything heavy.

Which base suits which shed?

Paving slabs

Good for small to medium timber sheds on firm, level ground. Needs a compacted sub-base and care to keep every slab flush.

Plastic grid and gravel

Fast to lay, free draining and forgiving on slightly soft ground. Best for lighter timber sheds and bike or bin stores.

Timber frame base

Suits smaller timber sheds and raises the floor off wet ground. Uses treated bearers on firm pads, not bare soil.

Poured concrete

The only option for any concrete garage, workshop or heavy building. Non-negotiable for our sectional buildings.

Can you really build a shed base without concrete?

Yes, for a light timber shed you can skip concrete entirely. Plenty of garden sheds sit happily on paving slabs, plastic grids, timber frames or gravel for years. The job of a shed base is simple. It has to be firm, level and free draining, and it has to keep the timber floor off wet ground. Any of these methods can do that if the ground work underneath is done properly.

The catch is weight and size. A timber shed weighs very little and spreads its load over a wide footprint. It flexes a bit, it can be lifted or shimmed, and if the base settles slightly it rarely matters. That tolerance is what makes the non-concrete options viable. It is also exactly what a concrete building does not have.

So the honest answer has two halves. If you have a wooden shed up to roughly 3m by 4m, read on and pick the method that suits your ground and your budget. If you are putting up a concrete garage, workshop or any sectional building, none of these will do, and we will explain why further down. We would rather tell you that now than have you lay slabs and then find they cannot carry the building.

Paving slabs: the classic shed base

Paving slabs are the most common way to build a shed base without concrete, and for good reason. Laid on a proper sub-base they give a flat, hard, level surface that timber sheds sit on cleanly. They are cheap, widely available and forgiving to work with because you can lift and re-bed a single slab if it settles.

The work that matters is under the slabs, not the slabs themselves. Mark out the base a little larger than the shed, dig off the turf and topsoil, and get down to firm ground. Lay and compact around 75mm to 100mm of MOT Type 1 sub-base, then blind it with a thin layer of sharp sand. Bed each slab on five spots of mortar or a full sand and cement mix, and check level constantly with a spirit level across a straight edge. Small gaps between slabs are fine and help drainage.

Slabs suit small and medium timber sheds well. The weakness is level. If the ground is soft in places or you skimp on the sub-base, individual slabs rock and the shed door starts to bind. Take your time on the base and it will stay put. This is a genuine alternative to concrete for a wooden shed, but not for anything heavier, because slabs bedded on sand will shift under a real load.

Plastic grid systems filled with gravel

Plastic grid bases are the fastest non-concrete option and they drain brilliantly. You lay a geotextile membrane over prepared ground, clip together interlocking plastic cells, then fill them with 10mm to 20mm gravel. The gravel locks into the cells so it cannot scatter, and the shed sits on a firm, permeable platform that lets water straight through.

They are popular because there is no mixing, no curing and very little skill involved. For lighter timber sheds, bike stores, bin stores and summerhouses they are hard to beat on speed. They also cope with slightly uneven or soft ground better than slabs, because the load spreads across the whole grid rather than through separate points.

The preparation still counts. Strip the turf, level the ground, lay the membrane to stop weeds and stop the gravel sinking into the soil, and compact a shallow sub-base first if the ground is soft. Grids are a real alternative to concrete for a light shed, but be honest about weight. A heavily loaded workshop shed full of tools and machinery is pushing what a grid can carry, and a concrete building is completely out of the question on one.

Timber frame and bearer bases

A timber frame base lifts a shed clear of the ground on treated joists, and it works well for smaller timber sheds. You build a frame of pressure-treated bearers, sit it on firm pads or slabs so the timber never touches soil, and fix the shed floor to it. The air gap underneath keeps the floor dry and lets it breathe, which is a real advantage on damp ground.

The key is what the frame rests on. Bearers laid straight onto earth will rot and sink, however well treated they are. Set them on concrete pad stones, paving slabs or a compacted gravel strip, spaced so the shed floor has no long unsupported spans. Level each support carefully, because a frame that racks will twist the shed above it.

This method suits small to medium wooden sheds and is often used with plastic or concrete pads sold as shed feet. It is quick and it copes with a gentle slope, since you can pack the low pads up to level. Like every option here, it is for timber only. A concrete building loads far too much weight in one place for a timber frame to carry.

Gravel bases

A compacted gravel base is a simple, cheap and free-draining choice for a light shed, usually used with a timber frame or bearers on top rather than the shed floor directly. You dig out the turf and topsoil, lay a geotextile membrane, then add and compact around 100mm of MOT Type 1 or clean angular gravel within a timber or plastic edge to hold it in place.

Gravel drains freely and never holds standing water, which makes it a good pick on ground that stays damp. It also lets you correct minor level problems as you compact. On its own, though, gravel is loose underfoot and does not give a shed floor a firm, flat bearing surface, so most people run bearers across it to carry the shed.

Angular gravel matters here. Rounded pea shingle rolls and never locks together, so it stays soft and moves under load. Sharp, angular stone compacts into a solid mat. For a light timber shed this is a sound base. For anything heavier it is not, and it is worth saying clearly that gravel, slabs, timber bearers and plastic grids are all fine under a light timber shed and are never an option under a concrete building.

When you must use concrete instead

You must pour a concrete base for any concrete building, full stop. A concrete garage, shed, workshop or garden room is heavy, rigid and unforgiving. The panels are set on the base and and mortared in, so the base has to be dead flat, dead square and strong enough to carry the whole structure without moving. Slabs on sand, a plastic grid or a timber frame simply cannot do that, and no reputable supplier will erect a sectional building on one.

Our own standard is a poured slab 100mm thick, laid 150mm wider and 150mm longer than the building overall, and left to cure for about a week before the building goes up. Thickening the outside edge of the slab to 150mm is better and we are happy to see it, but it is optional. Most builders pour a flat 100mm slab unless you ask for the edge to be thickened, and that flat slab is perfectly correct for a standard building.

The reason is simple physics. A concrete building concentrates its weight along the base of the walls, and any settlement or twist tells immediately as gaps at the panel joints or doors that will not shut. A cured concrete slab spreads that load and stays put. If you are weighing up a wooden shed against a concrete one, the base is part of the decision, because the concrete building brings a concrete base with it whether you like the extra work or not.

How to choose the right base for your shed

Start with the shed, not the base. Weigh up how big and how heavy it is, what you will keep in it and how long you want it to last. A small storage shed on firm, level ground is happy on slabs or a grid. A larger workshop shed full of tools puts real weight down and wants the most solid non-concrete option you can manage, or honestly, a concrete slab.

Then look at the ground. Firm, level ground gives you a free choice. Soft or damp ground pushes you towards a grid or a compacted gravel base, both of which spread load and drain well. A slope pushes you towards a timber frame you can pack to level, or a proper dig-and-fill to create a flat platform. Whatever you choose, the preparation underneath matters more than the material on top. A membrane against weeds, a compacted sub-base on soft ground and a slight fall for drainage will save you trouble every time.

Finally, be realistic about the future. If there is any chance you will replace a tired wooden shed with a concrete building later, it is worth knowing you will need a concrete base at that point anyway. Some people go straight to concrete for that reason, since it will carry a timber shed now and a heavier building later. If you are only ever going to have a light shed, a well-built non-concrete base is money well spent and less work.

Getting the groundwork right, whatever the method

Whichever base you pick, the groundwork decides how long it lasts. Every method here starts the same way. Mark out the base slightly larger than the shed, strip off the turf and topsoil until you reach firm ground, and clear any roots. Skipping this and building on soft topsoil is the single most common mistake, because topsoil holds water, compresses and moves with the seasons.

Lay a geotextile membrane on the cleared ground before slabs, grids or gravel go down. It stops weeds coming up through the base and stops gravel or sand migrating into the soil below. On soft ground, compact a shallow sub-base of MOT Type 1 first, ideally with a hired plate compactor rather than by hand, because a well-compacted sub-base is what stops the whole thing settling later.

Get the level and the fall right while you can still adjust things. Use a long spirit level on a straight edge, or a laser level for a bigger base, and set a very slight fall so surface water runs away from the shed rather than towards it. Leave a small gap or a gravel margin around the shed so rain drips clear of the timber. Do these things and a non-concrete base will serve a light shed for many years.

Common questions

Is a concrete base better than slabs for a shed?

For a heavy shed or any concrete building, yes, concrete is far better because it stays flat and carries load without moving. For a small timber shed on firm ground, well-laid slabs on a compacted sub-base are perfectly good and easier to put down. Choose by the weight of the shed and the state of the ground.

Can I put a concrete garage on paving slabs or gravel?
