Concrete base laying is the groundwork that gives a garage, shed or garden room a flat, level, load-bearing slab to stand on. What's included in a Nucrete concrete base?
A Nucrete concrete base is priced as one complete job — you won't be left arranging skips, muck-away or materials on the side. Every base includes the dig-out and everything that follows:
- Excavation of the ground, with earth removed off-site where required
- A compacted hardcore sub-base
- Timber shuttering, set flat, level and square
- A damp-proof membrane where the job calls for it
- Optional in-floor insulation — popular for garden rooms and workshops
- C30-grade concrete laid to 100mm, with fibre reinforcement included
Alongside new bases, we remove and replace bases that have failed, skim bases that are sound but uneven, and give honest advice on whether your existing slab will do the job — sometimes the answer is that you don't need us at all.
Why does the base matter so much?
Because a sectional concrete building is only as good as what it stands on. The panels of a concrete garage bolt together around the edge of the slab, so the base has to be flat, level and square — a dip or a slope twists the building, strains the joints and stops the door running true.
Get the base right and everything after it is straightforward: the building goes up quickly, the roof lines up, and the structure performs the way it should for decades. How does the process work?
It starts with a quote, not a sales visit. Tell us the size of base you need, your postcode and what's on the ground now, and we'll price the job personally — free and with no obligation. A real person reads your details and you'll usually hear back within one working day with a written quote; if your existing base is good enough as it is, we'll tell you that instead.
On the job itself, a typical residential base is completed within a day. Larger projects take longer, and where the ground needs more preparation we'll dig out and pour on separate days. Once poured, the concrete needs time to cure — allow at least 7 days before a building is installed on it.
What we need to quote your base
The more you can tell us up front, the faster and more accurate your quote — and for most sites a few phone photos tell us as much as a site visit would:
- The size — the base dimensions if you know them, or just the building you're planning and we'll work out the rest.
- Your postcode — so we can plan the job; we're a fully insured, UK-wide service.
- The access — gates, passageways, steps, and how close a vehicle can get to the spot.
- The current surface — grass, paving, an old slab, or an old garage still standing on it.
- A few photos — a couple of shots of the spot and the route in.

Can you lay the base and supply the garage together?
Yes — and it's the simplest way to do it. One contractor handles the old garage removal, the new base and the new building, so the base is laid to the exact specification the building needs and the dates line up without you chasing anyone. We've been laying bases for garage customers for more than 25 years.

How long does laying a concrete base take?
Most residential bases are completed within a day. Bigger jobs take longer, and ground preparation and the concrete pour sometimes happen on separate days. After the pour, allow the concrete at least 7 days to cure before a building is installed on it.
Will the base be right for the building I'm planning?
Yes — tell us which building you're ordering and we lay the base to its specification. That applies to Nucrete buildings and to other leading makes including Hanson, Lidget and Dencroft. If you have plans, we'll work from those.
Is the base work guaranteed?
Yes — all our base work comes with a 10-year guarantee, and a Nucrete building standing on it carries its own 10-year structural factory guarantee.
Do you charge for quotes?
No. Base quotes are free, no-obligation and prepared personally — send us your size, postcode and a few photos and we'll come back with a price.
Do you need to visit before quoting?
Usually not. For most sites, photos or a virtual site survey give us everything we need to quote accurately. If your site genuinely needs eyes on it, we'll say so rather than guess.
My existing base is uneven — do I need a whole new one?
Not always. If the slab is sound but uneven we can often skim it level rather than replace it. Send photos and we'll tell you straight which option makes sense.
How much does a concrete base cost?
Every base is priced individually, because the ground, the access and the size all move the figure. Quotes are free and personal: send your base size, postcode and a few photos, and buying the base and building together usually works out cheaper than arranging them separately.
