Embarking on a new garden construction project is always an exciting journey filled with endless possibilities. From planning your dream garage or workshop to building a home office, the whole process can be thrilling. However, before you dive into the aesthetics or fine-tune the architectural elements, it’s crucial to lay the groundwork—literally.

The base, often referred to as a ‘slab foundation,’ plays a pivotal role in ensuring the longevity and stability of your structure. In essence, the base isn’t just a part of your building; it is the cornerstone that holds everything else in place.

What is a Slab Foundation?

In the world of construction, a slab foundation is typically a flat, thick layer of concrete poured directly onto the ground, usually after some level of site preparation and installation of a sub-base.

This serves as the base on which the rest of the structure will be built. Some slab foundations also include reinforcement to improve their strength and durability.

Why is it Vital?

A poorly constructed foundation can lead to various issues down the line, such as cracking, water intrusion, and even structural failure. These issues can result in costly repairs and possibly even decreased property value. Therefore, getting your foundation right is not just an option; it’s a necessity.

We cover most parts of the UK mainland and some of the Islands and Highlands. Contact us on the form above and we’ll confirm if we cover your area.

Not at all. In fact, we’re often more competitive than local builders because base work is all we do in the building trade. We’re geared up with all the right materials and tools, and that makes us more competitive in many circumstances.

We know the required specification for virtually every garden building manufacturer in the UK, and if we don’t we will liaise with your building supplier to ensure the base is built to the correct specifications.

We take into account things like gutter overhangs etc when setting out the base, and will advise you if there are any concerns before we start any work.

It’s common to have slopes in gardens, and we use a mini-excavator to level the ground as part of our standard service. If you have severe slopes, we can build retaining walls.

We’ll usually conduct a site survey, or virtual site survey if we have any concerns before we quote your job, to ensure we provide an accurate fixed price quotation.

Where ever possible we will grade (slope) the surrounding earth away from the base area as part of our standard service.

If this is not possible, we can fit a drainage trench around the base area filled with gravel, or alternatively fit a soakaway.

If there is chance of groundwater entering the building, or a high water table, we would recommend installing a DPM (damp proof membrane) for very little extra cost.

Yes of course. We can set the completed base height to match that of the surrounding finished ground height. With level access doors, a drainage channel is required to be installed in front of the door threshold.

We provide a tamped finish on all bases. If you are building a garden room where the base will be the internal floor, it is recommended to apply a chemical floor screed after the building is installed to provide a perfectly level floor ready for tiling or flooring.

Certainly. If you are building a garden room or workshop where you will be spending time, it’s well worth considering an insulated base. From our perspective, It’s just a matter of laying insulation boards down before the concrete, and digging the foundations a little deeper – but from your perspective, it can create a much more comfortable environment to spend time in.

The biggest benefit is that the insulated concrete provides thermal mass to help regulate the internal temperature all year round, and you can tile on the concrete without risk of cracking as you may expect with a timber sub-floor.

Depending on your garden, we can either spread the spoils of excavated earth around the garden or take it away in a skip or similar. We’ll discuss this with you and provide the service that best suits your preferences.
